something feels off
the quiet symptoms of living disconnected from yourself & what they're trying to tell you
You know that feeling. It’s unmistakable and yet, it doesn’t make itself known when it enters your body.
There’s no single moment you can point to, no dramatic breaking point, no obvious sign that something has shifted. It’s quieter than that. Subtler. The kind of thing that creeps in so gradually you almost don’t notice it happening – until one day you’re sitting in the middle of your life and realizing that something feels off.
Not necessarily broken or wrong. Just... off.
And you can’t quite explain it to anyone, because from the outside everything looks fine. Sometimes you can’t even explain it to yourself because you also believe everything looks fine and that should be enough. Right?
This is what it feels like to be out of alignment. To be living at a distance from yourself. And I want to talk about it today because I think more women are living here than would ever say it out loud. And I say this because I have lived here – more often than I’d like to admit – though I am now actively aware of how I got there and doing the proactive work to not end up there again.
the symptoms nobody names
It shows up differently for everyone but there are patterns. Things I’ve heard across enough conversations that I’ve started to recognize them as signs rather than coincidences.
You’re tired in a way that sleep doesn’t fix. Not physically exhausted – something deeper than that. A bone level fatigue that a good night’s rest or a vacation doesn’t touch. You wake up after 9 hours of sleep and still feel it.
You’ve stopped being excited by things that used to excite you. The goal you worked toward, the project you cared about, the version of your life you built – it’s all still there, technically intact, and yet something about it has gone flat. You keep waiting for the feeling to come back. And yet, it doesn’t.
You make decisions slowly, painfully, by sourcing. You ask everyone what they think. You make pros and cons lists. You research endlessly. Not because you don’t have enough information – but because you don’t trust the voice inside you enough to listen to it. You probably hear too many voices, competing for the winning spot, and you don’t know which one to follow. So you keep looking outside yourself for an answer that never feels right either.
You go through the motions. You show up, you perform, you do the things.
Check, check, check.
But there’s a version of you that isn’t quite present for any of it. You’re watching your life from a slight distance, doing what needs to be done, and quietly wondering when it’s going to start feeling like yours again.
You tell yourself it’s your luteal phase – spoiler, that only lasts about 10 days not 10 months. You say it has to be mercury in retrograde. Maybe when the seasons change, or when the clocks go back, things will click and you’ll feel like yourself again – you’ll know yourself again.
You feel guilty for feeling this way. Because you know you have things to be grateful for. Because other people have it harder. Because you built this life and you should want it. The guilt sits on top of everything else and makes it harder to name what’s actually wrong.
This guilt gets me every, single, time. I can’t feel unhappy when nothing is really that wrong. I’ve had harder seasons in life, why do I have any right to complain or feel frustrated now. So the cycle continues, I push down that voice telling me something is off and remind myself, an attitude of gratitude is a must!
what’s actually happening
Here’s what I’ve come to understand about that low grade wrongness, that persistent feeling of off-ness that doesn’t have a clean explanation:
It’s not ingratitude. It’s not weakness. It’s not you being difficult or dramatic or asking for too much.
It’s disconnection. From yourself. From the quiet inner voice that has always known – the one that’s been trying to get your attention for a while now, while you’ve been busy, distracted, overriding it with logic and obligation and the weight of everything you’ve already built.
That voice is your intuition. And when you stop hearing it – or when you hear it and keep choosing not to listen – the disconnection builds. Slowly at first. Then all at once.
The exhaustion is your body carrying the weight of decisions that you made out of alignment. The flatness is what happens when you’ve been living someone else’s version of your life for long enough. The paralysis around decisions is what it feels like when you’ve stopped trusting yourself so completely that you don’t know how to start again.
None of this means you’re broken. It means you’ve drifted. And drifting, unlike breaking, is something you can find your way back from.
As a visual thinker, I like to think of this as being in a kayak and suddenly looking up to realize how far from shore you are. That moment of – wait, when did I drift this far?
But here’s the thing about a kayak: your paddle has two sides. You can get back. You will get back. And the only thing you need to trust to do it is yourself.
the way back
It starts smaller than you’d think.
Not a dramatic overhaul. Not quitting everything and starting over. Not a decision you have to make before you’re ready. Or before you’ve listened to your intuition – that’s the key part.
It starts with learning to hear yourself again. Noticing the signals your body is already sending – the tension, the ease, the sinking feeling, the quiet yes underneath all the noise. Rebuilding the relationship with your own inner voice so that when the big decisions come – even the small decisions, you have something to trust. You have yourself and your deep knowing.
That’s where everything else begins. Not with the answers – with the ability to hear yourself clearly enough to find them. That’s living in alignment and it’s a muscle, like anything else, that needs to be used, worked and built in order to continue to steer you toward a life you respect.
